“Often people attempt to live their lives backwards: they try to have more things, or more money, in order to do more of what they want so that they will be happier. The way it actually works is the reverse. You must first be who you really are, then do what you really need to do, in order to have what you want.” - Margaret Young
I've struggled with this my entire life. I really "like" things... really like things. If I want something, I usually will go out and buy it. Now mind you, i'm actually pretty frugal and am not a huge fan of spending money, but I spend in small batches, which seems to add to the clutter, and still ends up being quite a lot.
My husband is like this too, but he likes the "bigger" things. The big toys, the expensive ones!! Together we have done a great job of making a mess out of our finances!!!
I'm thankful that over the last 3 years we stopped and made a conscious decision to slow things down. That' sone of the reasons we sold our gorgeous dream home and moved into a MUCH smaller place... it forced us to stop..kind of gave us a do over.
Right now we are slowing down the spending, slowing down the wanting, and taking things one day at a time. We are learning to be content with what we have... we are finding out who we are without the stuff, and honestly we are liking it.
I'm not going to say it's easy... and we have times where we don't do well, but when we are both on bored with it and keep each other in check, there is actually less stress on our marriage and family.
Taking time to declutter, step back from the crazy, get out of debt, spend time with family, focus on health... has been good for our little family.
We are still dreamers and still have HUGE goals we want to reach, but we are going to "live like no one else, so that we can LIVE like no one else". Instead of going out and just getting them all right now... we are playing it smart, taking it slow. It's a good thing... you should try it!
When you read the quote above, what do you think about it... at what part of that quote are you at? Are you working to find who you really are, and doing what you need to do, in order to have what you want?
